They were assigned a product to make a commercial about with a partner. Then they talked as a group about various products that contain seaweed. The kids watched two videos to review the kelp growing process. Today in ASAP we learned about the commercial uses of seaweed. We could use the books Aquaculture for ME and the Aquaculture for ME Activity Book to help us find the answers. How many acres are used for finfish aquaculture in the state of Maine? (665) Seaweed aquaculture? (30) Shellfish aquaculture? (577) What are baby seaweed called? (Spores) What about baby shellfish? (Larvae or seed) What do we call shellfish with two shells? (Bivalves) We had to answer questions about aquaculture. We played Aquaculture Jeopardy! (Full game available here. She answered some questions about her work. She is from the University of New England. We talked about the book and asked questions. We read a book called Aquaculture for ME (PDF of book available here: ). Some of the adjectives were: greenish/brown, tiny, cute, slimy, wet, cold, and hairy/mossy. We talked about the kelp using as many adjectives as we could. Today in ASAP we looked at a picture of the baby kelp we are growing at Ponce’s, read a book called Aquaculture for ME, and played Aquaculture Jeopardy! We wrapped up by writing a photo journal entry.

We performed “Let it Grow.” It is to the tune of “Let it Go” from the Disney movie Frozen. We shared the fun facts we learned during ASAP with the audience. When the parents and community members arrived, we watched our seaweed commercial videos from earlier in ASAP. We brainstormed fun facts that we learned during ASAP and wrote them on cards.

There were also kelp crunch bars and kelp salad. We also made pineapple-strawberry-kelp smoothies. We made pizza that had kelp as a topping. We sprinkled this kelp powder on popcorn. We crushed dried kelp using a mortar and pestle. Thank you to everyone who made the program possible! Then parents and friends came to the school for our culminating event, so we could share what we learned with them, perform our song, and enjoy the food together. This week in ASAP we practiced the song “Let it Grow” and made pizza, smoothies, and a popcorn topping with the sugar kelp ( saccharina latissima) that we grew.
